Cork vs. Rubber: The natural alternative

The Corkeen system has several advantages when compared to conventional rubber-based retained fall protection systems.

Sustainability

Made from the bark of a cork tree, Corkeen is 100% sustainable unlike rubber surfacing.

Odorless

Cork is hypoallergenic, so when it is exposed to high temperatures, it does not release odors.  Rubber can give off a "tarry" or chemical smell when in direct sun.

Cooler to the touch

Being a natural insulator, Corkeen allows the reduction of the surface temperature by more than 20% when compared to some synthetic solutions like rubber.  In this way, in a park equipped with the Corkeen Play system, children can play even on the hottest days and even walk barefoot on the surface.  Rubber can get extremely hot to the touch when in direct sun- especially surfaces done in

darker colors. This can have a negative impact on play time.

Excellent drainage

Rain is never a problem because the Corkeen system has an excellent drainage capacity, keeping the surface dry and not slippery.  Rubber can get slick and because of its lesser drainage capacity.

Easy mobility

With a firmer top, Corkeen makes wheelchair movement, and elderly use more easy.  The noticeable difference in buoyancy of rubber makes walking and wheelchair mobility more laborous.

Lightweight

Cork is still a very light material, which means that Corkeen Play Original can be applied on surfaces where weight is an important factor.  Rubber is significantly heavier.
